Default Central heating - plastic pipes instead of copper?

Am doing a refurb at the moment and my plumber mate has suggested using plastic pipes instead of copper as they work exactly the same way, are easier to fit, and are much cheaper. I'll find out the price difference next week. But does anybody have plastic pipes for their central heating, and is it ok to use?

The last three systems we have had fitted have been plastic. At the time copper was cheaper but they can work faster with plastic. Since the cost is yours they are able to get more work / jobs in.

When the plumber brings the piping up to the radiators ask him / her to use copper. It looks better and then you can fit the plastic pipe covers in white or stainless.

Hope this helps

They are alot faster when I worked for a national housebuilder every project we did was in plastic, with exception obviously for the bouler drops etc, dont worry about quality etc its more than upto the job.

I have done all my refurbs for the past 4/5 years in plastic with no ongoing problems. Much easier and quicker to fit. Some of the old time Plumbers don't like it but in my opinion it's a case of they don't like to change their ways.

I assume it is Hep20 plastic which is easy to use. Like people above have mentioned it is good quality and quick to install. Surface mounting copper gives it a nice finish, but beware it is not recommended for use in the country as mice love eating it and cause all sorts of problems..

Cheers

J

In bottom end houses, gloss the copper stalks sticking out.

This will deter the druggies from wanting to nick the copper as painted pipework is no good to them.

Plastic clips can just be taken off & then copper is exposed making it tempting to a theif. Also it's cheaper to do , sadly a bit more time consuming.
