| | Hi from Bermuda (though originally Scotland) Hey everyone,
I am from Scotland originally (Ayrshire to be exact) but have lived in Bermuda now for about 7 years.
A long way from home and it can certainly make it difficult to do any property investing, but I am willing to learn as much as possible and get on the "property as investment" industry.
Am a Chartered Accountant by trade so if any of you have any UK based accounting questions please feel free to ask, would be more than happy to help.
Any advice on property investing would also be very much appreciated. I don't have particular locations in mind for investing - very much open-minded when it comes to these things - have been looking as far afield as Turkey and the US so no opportunity would be ignored.
Anyway, hopefully I will get to know a lot of you a whole lot better in the coming months and years.
Wishing you all a very prosperous property investment journey !

Welcome!
deep | Hi Deep,
Firstly, thanks for the opportunity to be a member of this group of like-minded individuals !
As for me ending up in Bermuda - I always wanted to travel so when I qualified as an Accountant (back in 1997 - makes me feel old) I had a colleague who had been here for a year and loved it, it was English speaking and is still a British colony - made it a very easy transition.
We had :
1. Someone we knew with personal experience of the island
2. No language barrier
3. Security knowing it was still "owned" by the UK.
3 tick marks which we wanted to see.
The downside is that we are approaching 7 years and starting to build some savings - but getting into the property market from afar is slightly concerning for me (I like to be close to the market I am operating in) - So any assistance that any of you may be able to provide in how to obtain "ex-pat" mortgages/loans would be greatly appreciated.
I would say that I could watch the Bermuda market for you all too - but the prices here are astronomical AND any ex-pat purchaser has to pay 20% on TOP of the actual asking price (it is the government's way of trying to deter the foreign investor).

| | Hi Craig,
Welcome to the forum. It's great to see members overseas. I was an expat for 27 years and it was worrying to invest in the UK. I got lucky since an old friend and business colleague fronted up for me in the early days, and never let me down. Now I'm living in blighty, it's a whole lot easier.
I may take you up on that offer to meet in Bermuda. But for the kids, my wife and I would be off trotting every 3 months or more frequently.
About the expat mortgages, I recall recently reading a Money Centre article about how many lenders are now treating UK expats on the same terms as UK residents (from a cost perspective) for BTL. I'm a past customer, and found their service exemplary. Drop a line to Doug Lowther there and ask him for some guidance / advice. I am sure he will help you research products. I use another broker now, but since you are remote, you may well find that their services are worthwhile. dlowther@themoneycentre.net
There are other members on here who offer broking and complete deal services. I am sure if you put a post for help in the general chat section, you will receive many offers for help, paid or unpaid
Regards, Gerry
