Hello everyone,
I've been itching to get on here for a while – hurray here I am.
Well, I wanted to get into property since watching Property Ladder when I was at Uni in 2002. When I graduated I got a job in Nottingham and bought my first house within 2 months. My wife and I renovated the place over the following year and were delighted with the result. We had about £25k profit from a £78k purchase (£12k spend). But.....we couldn't sell it!!! It was a 2 bed detached house that didn't tick all the boxes of any potential market. The garden was too small for elderly buyers, it was too close to the pub for single females, it didn’t have a third box room for small families and young couples, and wasn’t in a trendy enough location for professional men. After a year of being down about it I eventually came across Buy-to-let. Hallelujah.
We rented this house out successfully and we then did the buy-develop-remortgage-let model some more. My wife and I now own 8 properties and I'm still 25 :-D I'm not showing off but I'm so glad I've found some sort of outlet for creativity and ambition and I'm sure a lot of you feel the same.
Now the most interesting thing about our experience happened by mistake. My wife is from Taiwan and is an ex Notts Uni student herself. We decided to rent to Chinese students because they often wanted 12 month contracts rather than 10 or 11. Well.....we were absolutely over-whelmed with the response we got. As a result we now also run a UK wide letting agency specialising in Chinese student letting. The best thing for landlords is it's half the price of a high-st agency and not a penny is paid unless tenants are found. I wont go into more detail here...I'll post something in the services offered section for anyone who has student rentals or would simply like to know more.
From running this agency I've built great relationships with other landlords and I think this website is superb for doing the same. I'm quite busy but I aim to get on here as much as possible in the future as I'd like to expand our portfolio in Reading (where we now live) and London - wow - London's a daunting but exciting prospect.
At some point I'll share our experiences and how we got our 8 properties and I do enjoy reading everyone else's stories too. If anyone would like to discuss renting, portfolio building or developing in Nottingham or Reading then please feel free to contact me as I'd be very interested to learn more and swap stories, strategies, trades people etc
Thanks & Ciao for now,
Sean and Dorin
